The first coins with the effigy of Charles III, which became king after the death of her mother Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, come into circulation this Thursday, December 8, 2022, in the United Kingdom, according to an official statement.
The new parts worth 50 pence (nearly 58 cents) appear in the country’s post offices, “which will receive 4.9 million,” said Royal Mint, the body responsible for hitting the British currency.
The official portrait that appears on these pieces, a work of the sculptor Martin Jennings, had been unveiled at the end of September.
It was designed from a photo and approved by the king. As the tradition wants, the new king’s face is turned in the opposite direction of the monarch who preceded it. Charles therefore looks to the left, while the image of Queen Elizabeth II is turned to the right.
