This is a historic moment in Canada when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed his very first advisor responsible for the fight against Islamophobia this Thursday, January 26, 2023. It is Amira Elghawaby.
A recognized activist and journalist, Amira Elghawaby will play the role of “spokesperson, advisor, expert and representative” with the government in the development of policies reflecting the reality of Muslim communities, said a statement.
Reacting to this appointment, the National Council of Canadian Muslims (CNMC) said that there were “urgent changes to be made, whether it is to improve the supervision of our national security agencies or prevent our community organizations from being the subject of unfair controls”.
Amira Elghawaby has recalled the names of members of Muslim communities killed in Islamophobic acts in recent years because Canada remains a country marked by a series of attacks aimed at Muslim communities in recent years.
This appointment follows the recommendations made at a national summit on Islamophobia organized by the federal government in June 2021 in response to these attacks.
