A new assessment reports 1298 dead and more than 5,000 injured in Türkiye and Syria.
The results of the violent earthquake that struck Southeast Turkey Monday increased to 912 dead and at least 5385 injured, according to data communicated by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, indicating that it is the “worst disaster since 1939”.
The magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck South Turkey on Monday, near the city of Gaziantep on Monday in the Southeast and was felt in several countries in the region including neighboring Syria.
The earthquake took place at 4:17 local, at a depth of approximately 17.9 kilometers. The tremors were felt in Lebanon, Syria and Cyprus.
The toll could continue to increase, the emergency services are still looking for victims under the rubble of buildings that have collapsed.
According to Erdogan, 2818 buildings collapsed, which lets dread even heavier balance sheets which are added to the hundreds of deaths in neighboring Syria.
The earthquake left at least 386 people dead and 988 injured in northern Syria, according to provisional assessments communicated the authorities and the rescuers. Several thousand injured were also identified.
According to Syrian television, 239 people were killed in the collapse of housing and 648 injured in several cities including Aleppo (North), the second city of Syria. Victims were also identified in Hama (Center) as well as Lattaquié and Tartous, on the Mediterranean coast.
In the regions held by the rebels, close to Turkey, the white helmets counted 147, dead and 340 injured.
