The Cochet has touched several crops of prickly figs across the country and despite the efforts of the public authorities, this nuisance generated many losses.

Increased vigilance should be put in the governorate of Kasserine, especially in Zelfen where is the main bastion of barbarism fig in Tunisia.

With 25,000 hectares planted with barbarism figs, the locality of Zelfen can indeed claim the status of Tunisian capital of the prickly pear.

Zelfen is found in the governorate of Kasserine who is that, in Tunisia, in which the culture of the prickly pear is the best structured.

Indeed, in this governorate there are 16% of the planted national area. Recall that this area is 600,000 hectares of barbarism figs, which makes Tunisia one of the countries in the world where the surface planted in cacti is the most important.

In Zelfen, all the assets are gathered to give this small town a national or even international destiny. It is enough to combine the efforts to give this city the dimension it deserves of national pole in the culture of the prickly pear.

This culture is experiencing a remarkable evolution thanks to the processing industries of this fruit into jam, juice, vinegar or syrup.

In addition, barbarism fig is more and more appreciated for its antioxidant, firming and anti -cancerigen virtues. What boost the development of several Tunisian localities starting with Zelfen, in the governorate of Kasserine.
