Ons Jabeur and Marketa Vondrousova rose yesterday in the Wimbledon final, respectively against Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina. They will compete there on Saturday afternoon a first title in Grand Chelem.
The 24-year-old Czech Marketa Vondrousova qualified for her second Grand Chelem final by having the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina (6-3, 6-3) in the Wimbledon semi-finals.
Wounded and absent of long months last season and four years after having failed on the last step at Roland-Garros against Ashleigh Barty, Vondrousova, classified 42nd world, had won only four matches on grass in her career before this tournament, where she notably dominated four seeds: Veronika Kudermeto (12), Donna Vekic (20), Marie Bouzkova (32) and Jessica Pegula (4).
For his part, Ons Jabeur, 28 years old and 6th in the WTA ranking, eliminated Aryna Sabalenka in three sets (6-7, 6-4, 6-3) at the end of a reversing semi-final and when she was led to zero. She will play her second Wimbledon final on Saturday, a year after her defeat against Elena Rybakina.
The two finalists know each other well for having clashed six times in the past with perfect equality in number of victories.
The first duel between the two players dates back to April 26, 2015 as part of the 2nd qualification round at the Prague tournament. The Czech had beaten the Tunisian (6-3, 3-0) but Ons Jabeur had abandoned the injury game.
They meet on January 29, 2016 when Jabeur takes revenge in the 2nd round of the Sunrise Open and beats Marketa Vondrousova (6-3, 6-3).
On June 22, 2021, Ons Jabeur won again against Marketa Vondrousova as part of the 1st round of the Eastbourne tournament (6-3, 7-6).
The Tunisian once again beats the Czech on April 19, 2022 in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 6-3) as part of the 1st round of the Stuttgart tournament.
In 2023, Marketa Vondrousova, back from injury, returned in good shape and beats Ons Jabeur for the first time at the Australian Open on January 19, eliminating it at the 2nd round stadium (6-1, 5-7, 6-1).
Finally, on March 13, 2023, she recurred by eliminating the Tunisian in the 3rd round of Indian Wells (7-6, 6-4).
The final of tomorrow will in a way will be a good one between the two players who know each other very well very well and if ons Jabeur showed an exceptional mental force during this Wimbledon, Marketa Vondrousova showed, on the other hand, a lot of quality in its game.
