This is the story of a young man, Lee Chandler, who gives the beginning of the impression of being a sociopath. Through the scenes, we see that he suffers from problems of violence (Anger Management) and which is part of the working class, working as an employee in a small plumbing/electricity company in Boston.
His flat and mechanical life is turned upside down when his older brother, Joe, loses his life. The latter, separated for years from his alcoholic wife, decided to leave custody of his only son, a teenager, in Lee.
Through the mourning that each character does in his own way, the spectator makes the projection of a drama that everyone knows at one time or another: the loss of a loved one. Director Kenneth Lonergan, plunges us into the complex interior of Lee, forced to return to Manchester, this small coastal town, full of memories which he wants to get rid of.
Between the daily life of his nephew, and the memories of his old life that haunt him, Casey Affleck gives us the role of his career and makes us forget that he is Ben Affleck’s little brother. He inscribes his name in gold letters, via a chaotic and shaken performance, which raises him in the front rows, among the big ones.
Another point that makes this film a darling of criticisms around the world: music. The majority of the songs in the film are composed by Lesley Barber and perfectly and delicately enlarge the dark scenes of the film, giving birth to a smashing atmosphere.
(Be careful spoiler!) The classic piece “Adagio per archi e organno in sol minore” played when Lee Chandler, shot down and shaken, told the police the details of the drama that upset his life, the loss of his children, made this scene one of the best ever made in recent years.
And it is precisely at that time that we really understand the interior of Lee, and the reason behind his lonely and disturbed personality.
Casey Affleck was awarded the Golden Globe for best actor in a dramatic role and he has (very!) Big chance of winning the Oscars. For the latter, the film is nominated in six categories, including the best actor and the best film.
