More than one day and will start the new edition of the Cannes Film Festival which will take place from May 17 to 28, 2017.
This is a special edition since it will mark the 70th anniversary of this festival, one of the most important in the world. A special ceremony is also scheduled for May 23 to celebrate this anniversary.
But for us Tunisians, the most important event of this edition is not this commemoration, but indeed the selection of the film Beauty and pack by Kaouthar Ben Hania In official competition in the Un certain Look section.
This fictional feature, which will be screened as a world premiere, is a free adaptation of the book Guilty of having been raped From Meriem Ben Mohamed and Ava Djamshidi who tells the rape of the young Meriem by three police officers and his struggle to obtain justice.
This is not the first time that Kauthar Ben Hania has been present in Cannes. Indeed, in 2014, his film The Challat of Tunis had already been screened in the ACID section (Association of independent cinema for its dissemination).
Three other Arab films are also on the program for this 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival:
– Also as a world premiere and in competition in the Un certain Look section, the Algerian film While waiting for the swallows From Karim Moussaoui who tells of contemporary Algeria there through three stories, three generations … This feature film also contributes to the Golden Camera which rewards the best first feature film of all the sections of the festival. It should be noted that the script for this film participated in the South Writing workshops (Tunisia).
– In a completely restored version, the Lebanese film Towards the unknown? (ILA AYN?) by Georges Nasser will be projected as part of the Classic Cannes section. ILA AYN In 1957 was the first Lebanese film presented in official competition in Cannes.
– will also be in competition, in the short films section, the film A Drawning Man From the director of Palestinian origin Mehdi Fleifel: alone and far from home, The Kid crosses a strange city in search of means of spending his day. Surrounded by predators, he is forced to compromise to survive …
The Egyptian screenwriter and director Mohamed Diabwhose film Clash had made the opening of the section last year A certain lookis a member of the jury of this same section. This jury is chaired by American producer, screenwriter and actress Uma Thurman.
On the sidelines of the festival, several important events concerning Arabic cinema have been announced, including:
– the panel Beyond Borders : Why don’t some Arab films go beyond local borders?
The Arab Film Institute (AFI) is organizing in collaboration with the Jordanian film Royal Commission (RFC) and the Moroccan cinematographic center, a round table to try to understand the reasons why only a few Arab films have succeeded in transcending borders and crossing the international scene of the film.
The panel has several members of the AFI and the main experts in the region’s industry, of which Tunisian producer Dora Bouchoucha, Algerian producer Salem Brahimi, Moroccan producer Lamia Chraibi, Iraqi director Mohamed Al Daradji and Egyptian producer Mohamed Hefzy And will be moderate by George David, Managing Director of the RFC.
– The announcement of the winners of Arab criticism prices:
For the first time, the center of Arab cinema (ACC) oversees a prize issued by a jury of 24 members (including the Tunisian Mohammed Bougalleb) from 15 different countries.
This jury is chaired by Egyptian film critic and journalist Ahmed Shawky who said: “The most striking characteristic of the initiative is the clear interaction between Arab and foreign criticisms that are involved, and the most important thing to notice from the list of candidates is the great diversity of choices”. He added: “Nine films from Egypt, Tunisia, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Jordan have reached the final competition reflecting the boom for Arab cinema in 2016 and which continues during the current year”.
