The Arab cinema award ceremony will take place in El Gouna

AFI logoAFI logoThe Arab Film Institute (AFI) (non -profit cultural association, Arabic equivalent of the Academy of Arts and Sciences of American Cinema and the Academy of European film) announced that the first Arabic cinema award ceremony will take place in El Gouna (Egypt) on March 16, 2018. A partnership with the company Orascom was also concluded for this purpose.

This is the success of the first edition of El Gouna Film Festival Who convinced the AFI that this city is the right place to organize such an event.

“We are delighted to welcome the prices of Arab cinema in the charming city of El Gouna, which has become the new cinema center of the region,” said the Producer Mohamed Hefzyone of the founding members of the AFI.

The AFI also said in a statement that the ceremony will be similar to that of the Oscars.

These awards are an important initiative which will allow the AFI to mobilize professionals of Arab cinema, to strengthen cooperation between them, and above all to highlight the best productions of Arab cinema.

These awards are also designed to encourage, motivate and honor the creations and achievements of Arab filmmakers.

Arab cinema prices will concern 18 categories:

  • Best Fiction Film Fiction
  • Best non-fiction movie
  • Best Director Fiction
  • Best non-fiction director
  • Best actor
  • Best actress
  • Best screenwriter
  • Best director of photography
  • Best editor
  • Better artistic production
  • Best composer
  • Best costume designer
  • Best make -up
  • Best hairstyles
  • Best sound mix
  • Best short film
  • Best student film
  • Price for the whole career.

The appointments for each category will start in early November 2017. The candidates will be announced on February 15, 2018.

The films participating in the 2018 Arab cinema prizes must have had their first official projection (whether it is a festival or an ordinary cinema outing) after August 1, 2016 until August 31, 2017.

The directors of these films must have nationality or be from a member country of the Arab League, Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudite Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Tunisia, United and Yemen.

All nominees will receive a certificate and all the winners of all categories will receive a certificate and a statuette.

In addition to Dora Bouchoucha, who is a founding member and member of the AFI Board of Directors, several Tunisian cinema professionals, such as directors Ala Eddine Slim, Raja Amari, Mehdi Hmili and Kaouther Ben Hania, producers Lina Chaabane, Habib Attia and Nadim Cheikhrouha, the actresses Sarah Hannachi and Afef Ben Mahmoud are also members. They will all be able to vote for the awarding of these prices.
