Here and there I am asked which films to see during this 28 edition of Carthage Cinematographic Days. I admit that I find it hard to give advice on this subject so opinions concerning a film differ from one person to another.

Each film is actually three films: the film itself, the film that the director and the film wanted that each spectator sees through his own experience. It is very difficult to say intrinsically that such a film is beautiful and another is not.

It sometimes happens that a person sees the same film several times and that it is different each time.

In addition, There are 180 films programmed And those I know do not exceed the ten films. But I will still try to present some of you among those I have seen and I hope you like them too.

Insult (2017) by Ziad Doueiri (Lebanon)

I start with the film The insult That I had the chance to discover during the first edition of the El Gouna festival. It is a very very beautiful film that must be seen during these JCCs. The Palestinian actor, Kamel El Basha, who plays the role of Yasser in the film is currently in Tunis.

Synopsis Toni, a Lebanese Christian, water the plants of his balcony. Water has accidentally flows to Yasser’s head, Palestinian. Exasperated, the latter insults Toni. Wounded in his dignity, Toni decides to attack Yasser. Then opens a long trial where confrontation takes on a national dimension.

La Belle and La Meute (2017) by Kaouther Ben Hania (Tunisia)

This very beautiful film was in competition at the last edition of the Cannes Film Festival, in selection A certain look. There was also won the prize for the best sound creation. Beauty and pack has been released in France since October 18 and was praised by the press and the French public.

Synopsis During a student party, Mariam, a young Tunisian, meets the gaze of Youssef. A few hours later, Mariam wanders in the street in shock. Starts for her a long night during which she will have to fight for the respect of her rights and her dignity. But how can you get justice when it is on the side of the executioners?

While waiting for the swallows (2017) of Karim Moussaoui (Algeria)

This film was also in competition at the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, in the selection A certain look. A rather particular film, three different stories but which take over from each other and which sometimes meet … Identity crisis, Algerian youth which suffocates, stuck between two worlds and the other modern, hypocrisy …

Synopsis Today, in Algeria, three stories, three generations. Mourad, a real estate developer, divorced, feels that everything escapes him. Aïcha, a young girl, is torn between her desire for Djalil and another promised destiny. Dahman, a neurologist, is suddenly caught up in his past, on the eve of his marriage.

Sheikh Jackson (2017) by AMR Salama (Egypt)

This film had opened the 1st edition of the El Gouna festival last September in the first Arabic. He was also chosen to represent Egypt at the Oscar race. Is it a beautiful film? The opinions are very shared with regard to this feature film. I would say that the film is interesting. He recounts the tightness of a young preacher between a “normal” and modern life and the life devoted to the religion of a Salafist. Which one to choose? Special mention to the two actors MAGED EL KEDWANY And Ahmed Malek which were excellent.

Synopsis On June 25, 2009, the news of Michael Jackson’s death upset the world, touching several people, including an Islamic clerk (sheikh) whose nickname was “jackson”. But, what has a preacher has in common with the king of pop?

120 beats per minute (2017) by Robin Campillo (France)

A beautiful moving film, which has won The Grand Prix at the last edition of the Cannes Film Festival.

Synopsis The early 1990s, when the AIDS virus has been killing for almost ten years, ACT UP-Paris activists are increasing actions to combat general indifference. New to the group, Nathan will be upset by the radicality of Sean who consumes his last forces in action.

– Cinema parallel section of the world – Duration: 140 minutes – casting: Nahuel Perez Biscayart – Arnaud Valois – Adèle Haenel Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 8:30 p.m. at the Agora Tuesday November 7, 2017 at 8:30 p.m. at the Palace

The Square (2017) by Ruben Östlund (Sweden – Germany – France – Denmark)

It is not a crush on me, but it is a film that must be seen, first out of curiosity because it won the Palme d’Or in the 70th edition of the Cannes Festival, then because it allows to have an overview of Swedish society and especially because it has several very interesting reflections about art.

Synopsis Christian is an appreciated curator of an art museum. He is one of those people who support major causes. He prepares his exhibition around an installation encouraging visitors to altruism. But it is sometimes difficult to live in accordance with his values: when Christian is robbed of his phone, his reaction hardly honors him.
