The very young Tunisian cinematheque takes this opportunity to establish partnerships with four of the most important film archive centers in Italy: the Cinémathèque de Milan, the National Cinémèque de Rome, the Cinémathèque du Friuli and the Regional Film of Sicily.
The program of this mini-festival offers six films: three works from the past in their recently restored versions and three feature films of today, considered among the most important and interesting productions of recent years and which have received distinctions during festivals like Venice and Locarno.
This retrospective will allow you to discover the first steps in the cinema of Claudia Cardinale and Omar Sharif in the film Goha by Jacques Baratier which was presented, on behalf of Tunisia, in Cannes, in 1958 and had won the prize the first look in ex-aequo with the film Bronze faces of Softing Bernard. Restored by the French archives of the CNC film in collaboration with Diane Baratier, Goha was scheduled again at the Cannes Film Festival in 2013 in the Cannes Classics section.
This invitation to travel will also give the possibility of meeting the filmmaker, storyteller and plastic artist, Nacer Khemir, author of the film: Desert tags. This film which was recently restored by the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique, was presented as part of the Venice Mostra in September 2017, in the Venezia Classici section.
The program also has some of the most beautiful recent Tunisian films, such as The Last of Us from Ala Eddine Slim Who won Laurentis’ Luigi Prize for the first work at the Critics Week in Venice in 2016 and which was submitted by Tunisia at the Oscar for the best film in a foreign language in 2017, and the film Zaineb doesn’t like snow by Kaouthar ben Hania, Who won in 2016, the Tanit d’Or during the Carthage Cinematographic Days.
This crossing of Italy from north to south will stop in Pérouse, a very significant and symbolic step for Mohamed Challouf, the designer of this itinerant program because it allows him to return to the city where, when he was a student, in the early 1980s, he had created with his friend Enzo Fori, at the time director of the Centro Sociale Universitio: the Giornate del Cinema African, Competitive festival entirely devoted to the 7th African art. On this occasion, Mohamed Challouf will present his documentary Tahar Cheriaa in the shade of the baobaba film directed in 2014 and which paints the portrait of Tahar Cheriaa, founder, in 1966, of the cinematographic days of Carthage, the first film festival in Africa and in the Arab world.
