Earthquake in Afghanistan: more than 2,000 people dead

A powerful earthquake, of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter scale, struck western Afghanistan on Saturday, causing more than 2,000 people and causing enormous damage, according to a new official assessment communicated today on Sunday, October 8, 2023.

The earthquake that struck, yesterday Saturday, the regions located 30 kilometers north-west of the city of Herat, was followed by eight high aftershocks.

“2,053 martyrs died in 13 villages. 1,240 people were injured and 1,320 houses were completely destroyed, “said Taliban government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, formerly Twitter), citing the disaster management agency.

In the village of Sarboland of the district of Zinda Jan, dozens of houses have been destroyed. Men gave rise to rubble while women and children were waiting outside, in the middle of the debris.

“From the first shock, all the houses collapsed … Those who were inside the houses were buried. There are families of which we have no news, “said a witness on the spot.
