The Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu will be the president of the jury of the Cannes festival whose 72nd edition will be held next May.

“From the start of my career, the Cannes Film Festival was important to me,” said the filmmaker. I am honored and delighted to come back this year, and immensely proud to chair the jury. The cinema flows into the veins of the planet and this festival is its heart. With the jury, we will have the privilege of being the first spectators of the new films of our colleagues filmmakers from around the world. For their part, Pierre Lescure, president of the Cannes Festival, and Thierry Frémaux, general delegate, rejoice that the filmmaker responded to their invitation: “It is very rare that Alejandro G. Iñárritu has agreed to participate in a jury and it is the first time that the jury of the Cannes Film Festival will be chaired by a Mexican artist. Cannes is the place of all cinemas, and through the presence of the author of Babelit is all the Mexican cinema that the festival will celebrate. »»

Alejandro G. Iñárritu will succeed Cate Blanchett, president of the 71st edition of the Cannes Festival whose jury has attributed the Palme d’Or to A family affair of the Japanese director Kore-Eda Hirokazu.

The 2019 Cannes Film Festival will take place from Tuesday, 14 to Saturday 25 May.

Director, producer and screenwriter, winner of several Oscars, Alejandro G. Iñárritu is today one of the most recognized and respected filmmakers in the world.

As soon as he entered the cinema with Amores Perros (Bijages love2000), he is appointed for the Oscar for the best foreign film. The film, presented in Cannes, at the Critics Week, is a drama that probe the Mexican company through three stories linked by a car accident in Mexico.

The following year, in 2016, Iñárritu won his second Oscar for best director to The Revenant, Meditation on revenge and reflection on the colonization of the West, the extermination of the American Indians and the exploitation of nature. Leonardo DiCaprio also receives the Oscar for best actor for his role.

First Mexican filmmaker to be appointed both as a director and as a producer in the history of the Oscars, Alejandro G. Iñárritu is also the first Mexican director to have received the Prize for the staging of the Cannes Festival.

In 2017, he designed the VR “Carne y Arena” installation (Virtually Present, Physically Invisible), presented world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival before traveling to Milan, Los Angeles, Mexico and Washington. This is the first time that virtual reality has come into an official selection in Cannes. Hargered by international criticism, “Carne y Arena” received a special Oscar, a reward allocated only fifteen times in the history of the Academy. It was the fifth Oscar won by Alejandro G. Iñárritu.
