The United States used, this Wednesday, October 18, 2023, its veto in the UN Security Council against a resolution calling for a humanitarian ceasefire to allow the entry of aid into the Gaza Strip.
Out of 15 member states of the Council, 12 voted for this text carried by Brazil and condemning the “odious terrorist attacks” of Hamas, two abstained, including Russia, but the United States, one of the five permanent members, voted against, which is enough to reject any resolution.
The United States criticizes the text for not mentioning the “right of Israel for defending itself” and therefore continues to protect its ally, Israel, of any action against it to the Security Council.
It should be recalled that today, the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, called for an immediate ceasefire for humanitarian reasons in order to allow the release of hostages and the arrival of aid to Gaza.
The draft resolution also urges Israel, without appointing it, to cancel its order of movement of the United Nations and the United Nations employees in Gaza south of the Palestinian band.
