Five Tunisian films at the Cairo International Film Festival

It’s this evening that will start The 41st session of the Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF)which will take place from November 20 to 29, 2019.

The program for this session, dedicated to Egyptian cinema critic Youssef Cherif Rizkallah Died this summer 2019, was announced at a press conference. 153 films from 63 countries will be screened in several sections during these 9 days.

This year, Tunisia participates in CIFF with five films (four long and one short):

– A son (bik naich) From Mehdi Barsaoui, with the main roles Samir Bouajila and Najla Ben Abdallah, will be the opening film of the “horizons of the Arab film” competition and will benefit from a gala projection, with a red carpet for the film team.

Synopsis:
Tunisia, summer 2011. Farés and Meriem spin happy days with Aziz, their 11 -year -old son. During a stay in the south of the country, an event changes the course of their lives. While a race against the clock starts, long -lived truths are starting to resurface.

The first of the film A son had taken place at the 76th edition of the Venice Mostra, in the “Orizzonti” competition. He had won the Interfilm Prize for the best film from the ecumenical jury and the prize for the best male interpretation for Sami Bouajila.
A son was also selected at several festivals, including the filmfest Hamburg, the BFI London Film Festival, the Mumbai International Film Festival, Les Journées de Carthage where He won a special mention of the first work jury And at the International Film Film of the French -speaking film in Namur, in a first work competition where he won the public prize.

– On the transversal, Sami Tlili’s documentary film, is also in competition “horizons of Arabic cinema”. This very beautiful film, currently in the cinema in Tunisia, made its first at the Carthage Cinematographic Days.

Synopsis:
For the collective memory of Tunisians, 1978 is the unforgettable memory of this famous national football team and its “epic towards Argentina”. An intergenerational myth that marked out my childhood accompanied by an intriguing question long remained unanswered: Why was my mother refused to watch football? What if in the end of 1978 was not just a football story?

-before it is too late by Majdi Lakhdar, with in the main roles Raouf Ben Amor, Rabia Ben Abdallah, Majd Mastoura and Selma Mahjoubi, in competition in the “Critics’ Week” section.

Synopsis:
Before it is too late tells the story of Ali an old and poor designer who spends his time looking for a treasure not found in an underground gallery of his house, until the day when he finds himself stuck with his wife and children under the rubble following the collapse of their house. He will try to take care of them and protect them by taking them to the shelter in the secret underground gallery, fighting and looking for a way to save them before it is too late.

– The scarecrows From Nouri Bouzid, with in the main roles Nour Hajri, Afef Ben Mahmoud, Joumene Limam, Mehdi Hajri, Sondos Belhassen, Fatma Ben Saidane, Noomen Hamda will be projected in the “Special projections in Hors Competition”.

Synopsis:
In December 2013, Zina and Djo, returned to Tunisia from the Syrian Front where they were kidnapped and raped. Zina was separated from her two -month -old child and DJO discovering herself pregnant in a total silence and only speaks of the Syrian horror in her next “raped” novel.
Nadia, lawyer, and Dora, a humanitarian doctor, accompany them in their hard and long reconstruction; Hold down by the violence of loved ones, from the tenacious gaze of social networks, and to be ill.
Nadia, also a lawyer for Driss, 21, homosexual persecuted and canceled by all schools, asks her to help Zina. Their rich meeting, will it allow Zina and Driss to open their black boxes, to assume and brave unjust society?

The world’s world premiere The scarecrows took place at the Venice Mostra in the “Scconfini” selection where he received the Special Human Rights Prize and was the opening film of the Nejib Ayed session of Carthage Cinematographic Days.

– Fatum From Mohamed Ali Nahdi, is a short film of 25 minutes, in competition in the “Cinema of tomorrow” section, which includes 21 films, including 11 world premiere.

Synopsis:
A passionate painter returns home after the work he lives with his wife and child looking for a surprise that changes the course of his life. In the three -part film, the director presents great changes in the life of the protagonist, whose fate we gradually discover.

Fatum won a special mention of the jury at the Cinemed festival in Montpellier and participated in the Carthage Cinematographic Days in the section “Regards on Tunisian cinema”.

As for the documentary film still in postproduction, Disqualified From Hamza Ouini, it was selected with 16 other projects to compete in Cairo Film Connection (CFC) which is the Festival co-production platform, which will be held from November 24 to 26, 2019. The CFC invites producers and film distributors as well as representatives of financial organizations, sales agents, TV channels and digital platforms, international and partnerships with filmmakers from the Arab world. These 16 selected projects are invited to participate in CFC meetings. A jury made up of Egyptian screenwriter Mariam Naoum, the founder and director general of Media Luna New Films Ida Martins, and the producer and consultant of Beholder Entertainment George David, will choose projects that will receive prices in cash and in kind.

The Tunisian composer of Music of Film Amine Bouhafa will be one of the five members of the jury of the competition “Horizons of Arabic cinema”. Amine won several awards, including in 2015 the César for best original music for the film Timbuktu by Abderrahmane Sissako and the Tanit of Honor of Carthage’s Cinematographic Days for his entire career.

In 2018, the young Tunisian actress Aicha Ben Ahmed had also been a member of the jury of this same competition.
