While it was planned that the management of the Cannes Film Festival announces on April 15, 2020 its decision concerning the maintenance or not of the 73rd edition, it has just published the following press release:
In this period of planetary health crisis, we have a thought for the victims of COVID-19, and we express our solidarity with all those who fight against the disease.
Today, we have made the following decision: the Cannes Film Festival will not be able to be held on the scheduled dates, from May 12 to 23. Several hypotheses are being studied in order to preserve the progress, the main one of which would be a simple postponement, in Cannes, at the end of June – in early July 2020.
As soon as the evolution of the French and international health situation will allow us to assess the real possibility, we will make our decision known, as part of the current consultation with the State and the town hall of Cannes as well as with the Festival board of directors, the cinema professionals and all the partners of the event.
Until then, the Cannes Film Festival attaches its voice to all those who demand with firmness that each and everyone respects general confinement and proof of solidarity in these difficult times for the whole world.
See you soon
The Cannes Film Festival team
It must be said that this decision was predictable. The situation is not clear today. The borders of several countries around the world are closed, and no one will be able to plan what will happen in the coming weeks, or even the coming months. Wise decision on the part of the festival management.
