In a previous press release, the management of the Cannes Film Festival had warned that it was impossible to organize the 2020 edition on the scheduled date, given the circumstances in which the whole world is located because of the pandemic due to the covid 19. It had therefore been announced that evidenced by this edition would be held at the end of June or early July 2020.
Following the speech of Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, who announced yesterday that confinement would last at least until May 11, 2020, and that the borders of Europe would remain closed until further notice, it has become obvious that it would not be possible to postpone the festival on this date either, which has just been confirmed by the management of the Cannes Film Festival in the press release that has just published:
“Following the declaration of the President of the Republic on Monday, April 13, we took note that the postponement envisaged at the end of June in early July for the 73rd edition of the Cannes International Film Festival is no longer possible on this date.
It is now difficult to think that the Cannes Film Festival can be organized this year in its initial form.
Nevertheless, we started numerous consultations in the professional environment in France and abroad last night. They agree that the Cannes Film Festival, which is an essential instrument of support for the film industry, must continue to study all the possibilities allowing to support the cinema year by making Cannes 2020 films exist in one way or another.
When the health crisis, the resolution of which remains the priority of all, will have passed, it will be necessary to repeat and demonstrate the importance and the place that cinema, its works, its artists, its professionals and its rooms and their audiences occupy in our lives. This is what the Cannes Film Festival, its film market and the parallel sections (Critics ‘Week, Directors’ Fifteen, ACID) intends to contribute. We are committed to it and thank all those who are by our side, public officials (Cannes town hall, Ministry of Culture, CNC), professionals as well as our partners.
Everyone knows that many uncertainties still reign over the international health situation. We hope to be able to communicate quickly on the forms that this 2020 cannes could take.
We can note that in this press release there is not yet a question of purely and simply canceling this 73rd edition, but of trying to study the possibility of organizing it in other forms. Possibly a digital form?
