The Cairo Film International Film Festival (CIFF) has just unveiled the complete list of members of the juries of the various competitions of its 42eme Edition to be held from December 2 to 10 at the Cairo Opera, during which 83 films in 43 countries will be screened, including 20 in world or international projections.
This year unfortunately, Tunisian cinema, which in 2019 had shone in 41th Edition of Ciff thanks to the film A son by Mehdi Barsaoui, who had won 3 prizes, is practically absent, with the exception of a short film Nour Directed by Rim Nakhli and a member of jury, Anissa Daoud.
The jury of international competition:
– President of the jury: the Russian director and screenwriter Alexander Sokurovconsidered one of the most eminent contemporary directors in Russia. His films were presented in most major festivals such as Cannes, Berlin and Venice, especially The Russian Arkwhich had been in competition at the Cannes Film Festival in 2002 and won the Toronto Festival Visions Prize, and his film Faust who won the Golden Lion at the Venice Festival in 2011.
– Members:
- Karim Inouz is a Brazilian director, screenwriter and plastic artist, of Algerian origin. His films have won numerous prizes around the world, including thee Un Certain Regard Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 for his film The invisible life of Euridice Gusmao. Karim has been teaching Scriptwriting and has also been a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences since 2017.
- Burhan Qurbaniis a German director, whose short films have won numerous international prizes. His feature films also participated in major festivals, including the Berlin 2020 festival where his film Berlin Alexanderplatz was in official competition.
- Gaby Khouryis a producer of Egyptian films and CEO of the International Films Misr, founded by his uncle, the late Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, in 1972. Gaby produced a wide range of feature films, documentaries and television series that obtained the approval of criticism and the public.
- Leblebais an Egyptian actress. She started working in the cinema in the age of 5, and during her career, was the show in 85 films and won numerous prizes as the best actress.
- Nayan Gonzalez NorvindMexican writer and actress, is known for the dedication of his family to comedy and song. She won the prize for best actress at many international festivals and recently participated in the latest film by director Michel Franco A New Orderwhich won the Jury Grand Prix during the last session of the Venice Festival, and which is also scheduled in this 42nd session of the Cairo Festival in Hors Competition.
- Najwa NajjarPalestinian director, wrote, produced and produced more than 12 films, most of which have been the subject of elegant criticism and won prizes at various festivals where they were selected, such as Cairo, Berlin, Cannes, Locarno and Sundance. Since 2020, she has been a member of the Academy of Arts and Cinema Sciences.

- Yaqout el-deeb is an Egyptian critic and cinematographic researcher, which writes for many artistic magazines and specialized newspapers. He holds a doctorate in film criticism of the Academy of Arts and has written a certain number of books in the field of cinema.
- Elena Rubashevska is a journalist, director and film critic (member of FIPRESCI). She obtained a master’s degree from the National University of kyiv’s theater, cinema and television. She worked as a director and screenwriter, creating media content for non -governmental organizations and socially responsible companies such as WWF, OSCE and UN. She is also program director of the Oko Ethnographic Film Festival.
- Anders E. Larsson is a Swedish critic, writer, producer and editor. He worked for years as editor -in -chief of cultural magazines. From next year, he will be the director of the Fantastic Film Festival of Lund.
During the press conference to present the program for this editionMohamed Hefzy, president of the CIFF for 3 years, expressed the difficulty this year to compose these juries because of the Pandemic of COVID 19 and the travel restrictions it caused.
This did not prevent the festival from respecting The Charter of the 50/50 collective signed in 2019and by which he is committed to respecting the men/women parity as much as possible. Indeed, it will be noted that apart from the president of the jury of the international competition, there are 10 members of women’s juries and 11 members of men’s juries.
