The UN General Assembly claimed a large majority of an “immediate humanitarian Truce” on Friday, a non -binding resolution qualified as “infamy” by Israel but hailed by Hamas.
After four failures in ten days of the Security Council to act, the General Assembly took over on this file which highlighted divisions, especially among Westerners.
The draft resolution, developed on behalf of the group of 22 Arab countries, mainly required an immediate, sustainable and sustained humanitarian Truce, leading to the cessation of hostilities. ” It was adopted at 120 votes for, 14 against (including Israel and the United States), and 45 abstentions including Tunisia, on the 193 UN members.
Palestinian ambassador Riyad Mansour let his joy burst after the vote. Hamas praised the adoption of the resolution, which notably provides for the “immediate” supply of water, food, fuel, electricity, and the “unhindered” access to aid.

The United States voted against unsurprisingly, the United Kingdom has abstained. France, Spain and Belgium, supported the Jordanian resolution. Germany, Italy and Finland have abstained.
