Only a few hours more and will be revealed the winners of the 74th edition of the Cannes Film Festival which was exceptionally held this year from July 6 to 17, 2021
24 films were in competition for the Palme d’Or.
Unlike previous years when there were a lot of discussions on films during the long lines of expectations and in the various pavilions of the international village, nothing like this year, since these queues have been deleted thanks to the electronic ticketing system set up because of the Pandemic of the Covid 19.
As for various specialized magazines and newspapers, everyone goes there on their own prognosis, without a real trend being visible, except perhaps for the Iranian film Ghahreman (a hero) Directed by Asghar Farhadi.
I personally saw 18 of the 24 films in competition.
If I had to give prices, I would without hesitation the palm of gold in the Iranian film Ghahreman (a hero)(or failing that the price of the best scenario and/or the staging). This film, very well written and very well made, denounces with finesse and subtlety, the misdeeds of the media and social networks which can create and destroy a hero in a few hours, only on the basis of rumors or simple statuses. The film is not only topical, but it concerns us all. These social networks have today become a weapon that decides on the destiny of human beings and sometimes even whole nations.
At the same time, the film allows us to know Iranian society even more, its mode of operation and its justice, which still in the 21st century knows the constraint by body, the death penalty and a system of compensation for very specific victims.
The film that deserves the Grand Prix would be the musical Annette From Leos Carax, for his beautiful story, but especially for his original staging.
The jury prize should return to High and strong by Nabil Ayouch, for the originality of his theme. Even if we can reproach the film some clumsiness of realization. Nabil Ayouch tells a story of fiction, inspired by his reality, and shot as if it were a documentary. In addition, the theme of the film is topical in our Arab-Muslim countries, whose youth is facing a huge movement of conservatism. Against this movement, some young people fight daily to give voice and be heard. These young people who fight against their families and their circles deserved that Nabil Ayouch tells their daily life and gives them a way to send their voices. High and strong is a message issued to the youth of the Moroccan (and Arabs) suburbs and explains that music (and culture in general) is a remedy against evils, a weapon of social demand and above all an alternative to violence.
It is obvious to me that the price of best female interpretation should return to Virginie Efira for her role as Benedetta, in the film of the same name, and inspired by the life of the nun Benedetta Carlini. Virginie Efira wore the film on her shoulders. She was more than convincing in this difficult and provocative role.
The price of best male interpretation should return either to Amir Jadidi for his role in the film A heroor to Simon Rex, for his role as Mikey Saber, former porn star in the film Red Rocketor to Gijs Naber for his role as Jakob Störr in The Story of My Wifewhere he was excellent in the role of this loving and tormented husband, no longer knowing what to do for at the same time to keep his wife and his own esteem and stay himself.
If he does not win the Palme d’Or, the price of the staging should go to A hero by Asghar Farhadi. If not Annette from Leos Carax.
As for the price of the best scenario, or to A hero of Asghar Farhadi, or why not to Compartment no 6from Juho Kuosmanen.
For some film critics, the Chadian film Lingui, sacred links Directed by Mahamat-Saleh Haroun should appear in this list, for me, he should not even have appeared in the selection!
In a few hours, the jury, chaired by Spike Lee and composed of the actress, screenwriter and director Mélanie Laurent (France), actor Tahar Rahim (France), director Mati Diop (France), author and interpreter Mylène Farmer (France-Canada), actress, producer, screenwriter and director Maggie (USA) Director, screenwriter and producer Jessica Hausner (Austria), director, screenwriter and producer Kleber Mendonça Filho (Brazil) and actor Kang Ho Song (South Korea) will unveil the list of this 74th edition.
