JCC 2021 – Jilani Saadi insurrection

I had the honor of being part of the commission which selected the Tunisian fictional feature and short films that will participate in the official competitions of the 32nd edition of Carthage Cinematographic Days (JCC). Among the three feature films selected, Insurrection by Jilani Saadi, who was unanimous by the four members of the Commission.

A beautiful film to see absolutely during this edition of the JCC. A particular style. A caricature of Tunisians and the current situation of the country. It is at the same time comical and very sad. Where is Tunisia going? And what tunisia do we want?

SYNOPSIS A madness took hold of the Tunis capital and its periphery. Nothing works anymore and the streets are delivered to the confrontation between police officers and demonstrators.

Overnight:

  • An old quadriplegic man is robbed of all his money and abandoned on his wheelchair by his son on the Bizerte-Tunis motorway.
  • Baya, a young girl abused by her fiancé, is thrown into the street, despite the dangers that reign that night in the streets of Tunis.
  • Mosmar, a small thug stabbed in the back, tries, despite the pain and bleeding, to flee and hide from an invisible horde that chases it.
  • Oueld Jennet, goes to his ex-wife to demand to see his little daughter, following the right of visit that the judge granted him. To prevent it, his ex-wife calls for help women in the neighborhood. They violate Ouel Jennet, remove all his clothes, make up it and put on a dress. Oueld Jennet flees, dressed like a transvestite. He meets four homophobic men who chase him.

Baya, Mosmar, Oueld Jennet disappear miraculously in-extremis each time, as by a divine will, and find themselves somewhere in the vicinity of Tunis, next to the old quadriplegic.

Baya, Oueld Jennet and Mosmar try to join Tunis together taking the old man with them.

Tunis seems far and inaccessible, this city which shines in the distance from a thousand lights. Along the way, they settle their accounts and take revenge in their ways of the injustices that they suffered at the start of the night.
