Cannes 2022 – A first part of the official selection announced.

The Cannes Film Festival has finally unveiled a first part of the films in the official selection of the 75th edition, which will take place from May 17 to 28, 2022, after two years during which the festival was forced to take exceptional measures due to the Pandemic of COVVIR.

This list, including the films that will probably be among the most important of the year and the most anticipated by moviegoers, was announced at a press conference held in Paris, and broadcast live on the Internet.

This press conference was the last for Pierre Lescure as president, since from 1er July 2022, Iris KnoBloch will succeed him at the head of the festival for a period of three years. Thierry Frémaux, general delegate of the festival, wanted to salute his presence, his work and his support throughout these past years.

This is the 75th edition, so a new anniversary of the festival to celebrate. Celebrate the past, the present and the future and wonder about the future of cinema.

The anniversary will be on Tuesday May 24, with many guests, filmmakers, artists, comedians, and a conference during which these professionals will come to think, express, think aloud, what is to be a filmmaker today and how all these artists will see their job in the future? With festival directors, there will also be a reflection on the place and role of film festival worldwide.

Wim Wenders in 1982, at a time when he already and a few others, thought about what the cinema became, had made a 45 -minute documentary Room 666. He had settled in a hotel room on the Croisette and had interviewed filmmakers, including Jean-Luc Godard, Paul Morrissey, Susan Seidelman, Werner Herzog, Robert Kramer, Maraoun Bagdadi and Steven Spielberg. The question was simple: is cinema a language getting lost, an art dying? In 1982, they were questions that arose.

40 years later, on the occasion of this 75th Birthday, a young director decided to return to the Croisette to ask these questions again. It would also be interesting to compare the responses of 1982 to those of 2022.

For Thierry Frémaux, cinema is not dead, cinematographic language is not dead, everything has been renewed, everything is always renewed, the selection presented that day will prove it, nevertheless it is good to ask these questions.

This year around 2,200 films from 155 different countries were submitted to the selection of the Cannes Film Festival. Almost all of them were seen, this is why only a first part of the selection is presented today, and next week, when they were all seen, may be added other films.

In 2021, the official selection included around 80 films, because it really concerned two years. In 2022, there will be just over fifty, including 47 announced today.

While in 2021, there were only about 28,000 accredited, this year there will be around 35,000 (there are certain regions, especially in Asia, with still travel restrictions), therefore an almost a return to normal which is 40,000 accredited.

The official poster and the composition of the juries will be announced in the coming days. In addition, Thierry Frémaux recalled that designating and organizing the members of the various juries was very difficult because all the artists work. He also claimed to have been impressed to see how the image industry left after Covid.

Are selected in official feature films, 18 films of the largest world directors, such as Kore-Eda Hirokazu (Palme d’Or for A family affair In 2018, jury prize for Such a father, such a son in 2013), Christian Mungiu (Palme d’Or for 4 months, 3 weeks, 2 days In 2007, award for the best scenario for Beyond the hills in 2012 and Price for best director for Baccalaureate In 2016),, David Cronenberg (Special Jury Prize for Crash in 1996), the brothers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne (Palme d’Or for Rosetta In 1999, Palme d’Or for The child In 2005, award for the best scenario for Lorna’s silence In 2008, Jury Grand Prix for The kid at the bicycle In 2011, best achievement price for The young Ahmed in 2019), Ruben Östlund (Jury Prize for a certain look for Turist in 2014 and Palme d’Or for The Square in 2017), Arnaud Desplechin(SACD Prize, Directors Fifteen for Three memories of my youth in 2015), James Gray And Chan-Wook Park (Jury Grand Prix for Old Boy in 2004 and jury prizes for Thirst, this is my blood … in 2009). The out -of -competition sections also include films of great directors such as Ethan Coen (Jury Grand Prix for Inside llewyn davis in 2013), Sergey Loznitsa (Price a certain look of the best achievement for Donbass in 2018), Baz luhrmann,, George Miller,, Marco Bellocchio And Olivier Assayas (Prize for the best director for Personal shopper in 2016).

The Un certain Look selection includes 15 films for the moment, including 7 first films and 8 women, among them three French directors.

This year marks the return to the primary objective of this section which is to show a young cinema, or sometimes even an experimental cinema. It is also the first time that a Pakistani film has been in official selection.

As for Arabic cinema, it has been absent for the first time for several years official selections, and its presence is limited to European directors of Arab origin: the Swedish director of Egyptian origin, Tarik Saleh, whose film Boy from Heaven is in official competition, and the French of Algerian origin Rachid Bouchareb, whose film Our brothers is projected in the RIGN CANNES section.
