As announced previously, the Cannes Festival has unveiled the films which are added to the official selection of this 75th edition to be held from May 17 to 28, 2022.
Seventeen new additions were announced, joining the 47 films unveiled at the April 14 press conference and the two films Elvis And Top Gun: Maverickannounced earlier. This brings the total number of films in selection to date at 64 against 83 during the July 2021 edition.
Among these seventeen films, seven come from France, thus bringing to 18 the number of French films in official selection, or 28 % of the programming. The new additions also see eight directors joining the different sections of the official selection, to represent 26% of the filmmakers whose films will have their first in Cannes. In official competition, five films out of twenty-one are made by women, which is a record. In 2021, there were only four.
What is also remarkable is that In the a certain look sectionthree of the four added films come from Arab countries:
- Mediterranean Fever Of the Palestinian screenwriter and director Maha Haj, tells the story of Waleed, a budding writer of Haifa, his forties, depressed, unhappy in his marriage and not assuming his role as father, who binds himself from his neighbor in the hope that he will help him to accomplish a sinister plan.
Maha Haj’s first feature film, Personal Affairshad also been presented in this same section in 2016.Cannes 2022 – Mediterranean Fever by Maha Haj - The blue of the caftanSecond fictional feature of the Moroccan director Maryam Touzani, produced by her husband Nabil Ayouch and co -produced by Amine Benjelloun, features Halim (Saleh Bakri) and Mina (Lubna Azabal), a couple managing a Caftans shop in the medina of Salé, who live in the denial of the homosexuality of the husband until a young apprentice quo.
Adamthe first fiction feature by Maryam Touzani had also made its world premiere in this same section in 2019.
