The outgoing president of Liberia George Weah, a former world football star, conceded, yesterday Friday, November 17, his defeat in the presidential election after a tight race, which should ensure a gentle passing in this West African country.
Joseph Boakai, former vice-president, won the second round of the ballot with 50.9% of the vote against 49.1% for George Weah, the Liberia electoral commission announced on Friday.
“I spoke a few moments ago with the president elected Joseph Boakai whom I congratulated for his victory,” said George Weah on national radio. “I call you to follow my example and accept the result of the election. »»
Many voters have estimated that George Weah, who has been in office since 2018 and former AC Milan, Chelsea and Manchester City star, had not honored his promises to reduce poverty and improve the country’s infrastructure.
Liberia is still struggling to recover from two devastating civil wars between 1989 and 2003 which left more than 250,000 dead. An Ebola epidemic, between 2013 and 2016, also killed thousands of people.
