The US congress has decided to block an envelope of $ 106 billion, 61 of which were intended for Ukraine, putting President Joe Biden in embarrassment.
Indeed, the Democratic President has failed to convince the Republican opposition to vote for this envelope of more than $ 106 billion, including funds for Ukraine (61 billion) and for Israel (14 billion).
Joe Biden, warned, on Wednesday, December 6, during a speech that refusing new aid to Ukraine would be “the greatest gift” offered to the Russian president, Vladimir Putin. This was not enough to convince the republican opposition to the Congress to unlock this envelope.
Conservative elected officials condition the vote of this aid to a net hardening of American migration policy. First recalcitrant, Biden said he was ready on Wednesday to compromise on his migration policy in order to obtain support from the two chambers in the Capitol.
For the time being, Biden’s promise to continue to financially support Ukraine is jeopardized, and this is a disaster scenario for kyiv which has benefited from $ 110 billion from the United States since the Russian invasion in February 2022
In the meantime, Washington announced on Wednesday a new military aid in kyiv, a limited amount of $ 175 million.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who was to contact members of the United States Congress in videoconference on Tuesday, but canceled his intervention at the last minute, finally intervened during a teleconference between the leaders of the G7 countries.
