In recognition of his great contribution to the cinema, through a large number of important films, most of which addressed questions related to women’s rights, the management of the International Film Festival of the Woman of Assouan (Egypt) decided to honor the great Egyptian actress Nabila Obeid when opening her seventh edition which will be held from March 5 to 10, 2023
Dr. Azza Kamel, vice-president of the Festival Board of Directors, said Nabila Obeid is one of the icons of Egyptian cinema, and has affixed an important footprint in the presentation of the problems of women on the screen, in particular through the roles she played in the adaptations to the cinema of many novels of the famous deceased writer Ehsan Abdel Quddous, Egyptians and Arabic expressing the concerns and problems of women.
The screenwriter Mohamed Abdel Khalek, president of the festival, confirmed that the tribute to Nabila Obeid during this 7th Edition of the Assouan Festival is in recognition of his merit in the presentation of dozens of important films, which will remain engraved in the memory of Arab cinema as a testimony to the important role of cinema in the management of the problems of society, as well as for its aesthetic role. He pointed out that Nabila Obeid is a unique star, having presented films with high artistic value, while being very popular, which made it one of the rare stars of the box office of the history of Egyptian cinema.
Journalist Hassan Abo Elela, director of the festival, explained that Nabila Obeid’s film career includes films that highlight questions related to women and their sufferings, such as Al-Takhshiba (1984) with Atef al-Tayeb, The woman and the ax (1996) with Saïd Marzouk, and The virgin and white hair (1983) with Hussein Kamal, as well as his collaboration with great Egyptian directors such as Salah Abu Seif, Youssef Chahine, Atef Salem, Ashraf Fahmi, Ali Abdelkhalek, Mohamed Khan and Samir Seif. He noted that Nabila Obeid’s film career reveals a great diversity, both in the characters she played as in the questions raised in her films.
It should be remembered that the artist Nabila made his debut on the big screen as a protagonist in the film Raba al-Adawiya (1963) With director Niazi Mustafa, when his fame began to flourish in the mid -1970s, and the public awarded him the title of the first Egypt star after playing in many films that have been very successful with the public and critics.
