The French National Assembly voted, last night, a motion of prior rejection of the Immigration bill. A huge slap for the government and for the text carried by the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, who immediately presented his resignation, refused by Emmanuel Macron.
It is a slap for the government, a total disavowal! The executive wipes a camouflet with the rejection of his text on immigration. The extremely tight result, near five votes, was greeted by numerous applause within the hemicycle.
The immigration bill was immediately rejected by the National Assembly, without even coming to the debate. This thunderclap, greeted by intense cries of joy on the left as to the right of the hemicycle, marks the failure of Emmanuel Macron and Elisabeth Borne to find a method of government in a minority context.
This rejection also sounds like a personal defeat for the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin, on the front line on this text. Even if the president refused his resignation, the minister finds himself weakened.
Of the 548 deputies who took part in the vote on Monday in the evening, 270 supported the motion of rejection defended by the Greens, 265 disapproved. A disaster scenario for the Prime Minister and her Minister of the Interior who did not expect such a slingshot a few days ago.
Two scenarios are now possible for the Government: Legovernment can refer the Immigration Bill to the Senate for a second reading or convene a joint joint committee so that 7 deputies and 7 senators seek an agreement.
