Cannes 2023 -The official selection of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival was unveiled this April 13 at 10 a.m. during the annual meeting with the French and international press.

It was this morning that the press conference was held to announce the selection of the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival to be held from May 16 to 27, 2023. Iris KnoBloch, the new president, and Thierry Frémaux, general delegate, presented the films selected.

During her opening word, Iris KnoBloch first praised his predecessor, Pierre Lescure. She then shared her emotion to meet there, as president, after her first visit to Cannes in 1998, that she would never have imagined seeing herself transform into such responsibility. She stressed that after having known the Cannes Film Festival on the other side of the barrier, she was happy to know him from the inside.

Iris KnoBloch also insisted on the importance of the selection of the Cannes Film Festival for the films presented there and noted that there is a before and one after the selection for the latter. Besides, she recalled that a very large number of the films in the selection of 2022 have had a good career, some of them even flights for Oscars, Césars and other awards. The Cannes Film Festival is thus a real springboard for films, offering them international visibility and many opportunities.

Finally, Iris KnoBloch recalled that it was the first tandem with a woman for Thierry Frémaux, but she is convinced that this tandem will succeed because the two share the same vision.

Thierry Frémaux spoke to thank all the members of the selection committees for their hard work. He announced that this year, around 2,000 films from different countries were submitted for the selection of the Cannes Film Festival. He said that all the films were watched with care and expressed his gratitude to all those who presented their work. Thierry Frémaux also underlined the importance of discovering new talents and announced a geographically extended selection, with a strong presence of American and Italian films, but also African, and even a Mongolia film for the first time.

Thierry Frémaux added that several directors will appear in Cannes, and that the selection will also include many renowned directors, offering a complete photograph of the film production of the year. In addition, he announced a strong presence of directors, highlighting their contribution and their work in the film industry.

“” After two years of a certain generosity wanted and assumed by the festival because of the pandemic, we return to a more limited number of films “He said. 19 films are currently in competition, whose film Olffa’s girls From Kaouther Ben Hania, first Tunisian director selected in official competition. It is for the first time in more than fifty years, that a Tunisian film will compete for the Palme d’Or of the Cannes Film Festival.

Other films will be led to complete this selection. They will probably be announced next week.

The Palme d’Or will be awarded by a jury, whose members have not yet been revealed, But who will be chaired by filmmaker Ruben Östlund, himself twice winner of this prestigious competition.
