South Africa officially accused Israel before the International Court of Justice (CIJ) through a request filed on Friday December 29, 2023 in which it denounces the Zionist entity to engage in “acts of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza”.
In this request filed in the United Nations main judicial body, South Africa affirms that the “acts and omissions of Israel are a genocidal character, because they are accompanied by the specific intention required (…) to destroy the Palestinians of Gaza as part of the national, racial and broader ethnic group of the Palestinians”, said in a press release in The Hague.
South Africa considers that Israel is lacking in the obligations incumbent upon the convention against the genocide, which has made at least 21,507 martyrs since the outbreak of war between Hamas and Israel, on October 7 in the Gaza Strip, including a majority of women and minors.
The request of South Africa is unlikely to achieve any sanction, the CIJ having no way of enforcing its decisions. In response to these accusations, Israel said that it rejected them “with disgust”.
