The powerful and numerous earthquakes that have shaken the center of Japan since Monday, caused “many victims” and significant material damage, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Tuesday January 2.
The seismic activity remained very strong after the major shock of a magnitude of 7.6. 154 others were recorded until Tuesday morning.
48 deaths have so far been identified when huge material damage has been noted following this series of earthquakes. The damage caused directly by earthquakes was greater, especially on old houses, generally built of wood.
A tsunami alert was immediately launched by the JMA, initially warning that waves up to five meters high were to be feared. The agency later lowered this theoretical maximum level to three meters.
