Koffi, who is considered a Zabolo (sorcerer), was banished by his mother. After fifteen years of absence, he returned to Lubumbashi to pay his dowry, accompanied by his future wife Alice. But he will have to face the prejudices and the suspicion of his community.
The price of freedom was awarded to Goodbye Julia by Mohamed Kordofani, the first Sudanese film in history to be selected in Cannes. The story takes place on the eve of the Division of Sudan and follows Mona, an ex-North Sudanese singer who tries to redeem herself after having accidentally caused the death of a South Sudanese man. She then engages the woman of this man as a servant.
Moroccan director Asmae El Moudir won the Prize for the best realization for her documentary entitled The mother of all lies Who explores the filmmaker’s past as well as the life of her neighborhood in Casablanca. Asmae returns to her parents to help them move and discover an intriguing photo of her childhood. This unique image becomes the starting point for an intimate investigation in which the director questions the little lies of her family, thus exploring the memory of her neighborhood and her country.
Finally, the jury prize was awarded to the film Packs From Kamal Lazraq, interpreted by the two non -professional actors Ayoub Elaid and Abdellatif Masstouri. This drama plunges spectators into a tumultuous night in the heart of the streets of Casablanca and follows Hassan and Issam, father and son, who try to survive on a daily basis by engaging in small traffic for the local underworld. A tragic event occurs when the man they had to kidnap dies accidentally in their car, leaving them with a corpse to make disappear. Then followed a long night through the shallows of the city.
The jury for a certain look of the 2023 Cannes Film Festival has thus rewarded committed and original African films, highlighting the richness and diversity of cinema on the continent. These victories bear witness to the importance of giving greater visibility to the Arab and African stories, which speak of today’s world.
