The main judicial body of the United Nations is seized. Israel faces, today Thursday, January 11, before the International Court of Justice Thursday, on accusations of “genocidal acts” in Gaza, formulated by South Africa and qualified by the Israeli president of “atrocious” and “absurd”.
Indeed, in an 84 -page request addressed to the International Court of Justice (CIJ) which sits in The Hague, South Africa urges the judges to order urgently in Israel to “immediately suspend its military operations” in the Gaza Strip.
Pretoria believes that Israel “indulges and risks continuing to engage in acts of genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza”.
At this stage, “the Court will not determine if a genocide is taking place in Gaza,” said Cecily Rose, professor in international law at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands.
“The Court will only evaluate if there is an irreparable risk of prejudice to the rights guaranteed by the Convention on Genocide, in particular the law of the Palestinians of Gaza to be protected against acts which threaten their existence as a group,” she said to AFP.
