The Portuguese government announced this Thursday, July 31, that it is starting a political consultation procedure with a view to officially recognizing the Palestinian State at the United Nations General Assembly.

In a statement published this Thursday, the cabinet of Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said that Portugal “is considering recognition of the Palestinian state” as part of a process that could lead next September, during the high -level week of the 80th UN General Assembly in New York.

Before any official decision, the government will consult the President of the Republic as well as Parliament.

This declaration is part of a growing European dynamic of support for the two -state solution. It follows the recent similar announcements from France, the United Kingdom and Canada.

Faced with the persistence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, several Western countries wish to revive diplomatic efforts in favor of peace in the Middle East. Recognition of a Palestinian state is perceived as a political lever to rebalance frozen negotiations for several years.
