The European Parliament voted this Thursday, January 18, 2024 in favor of a resolution requesting a lasting ceasefire in Gaza.
Indeed, European deputies asked on Thursday for the first time a “permanent ceasefire” in Gaza and the launch of political efforts to find a solution to the war between Israel and Hamas.
According to French media, while left-wing groups and hemicycle centrists had openly supported the call to the ceasefire, members of the European People’s Party (PPE), the first political force in the hemicycle, had expressed reserves.
Note that the 27 Union leaders have not yet unanimously decided to call for a ceasefire, despite calls from Belgium, Spain and Ireland. Until now, the official line of the 27 remains focused on “breaks and humanitarian corridors”.
