At the heart of a controversy in France, the Tunisian imam Mahjoub Mahjoubi was arrested this Thursday, February 22, 2024.
Mahjoub Mahjoubi, Tunisian Imam of Bagnols-sur-Cèze (Gard), was arrested for his expulsion, announce the French media.
He was arrested at his home in Bagnols-sur-Cèze and was placed in a detention center in the Paris region. “An expulsion order signed by the Minister of the Interior was notified to him this morning,” added the French media.
It is a preaching of the Tunisian imam, who ignited the debates. In a video broadcast on social networks, he described the “tricolor flag” as “satanic flag”, arguing that he had “no value with Allah”.
The French Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, reacted on February 19 and announced that he had required the withdrawal of the residence permit from the Imam in question, while expressing the expectation of his expulsion from the territory.
Born in Tunisia, Mahjoub Mahjoubi has lived in France for forty years when he has founded a family with a Frenchwoman and is the father of five children. The withdrawal of his residence permit opens the door to a new controversy in France.
