Libya: towards a salutary intervention

After intense diplomatic activity, events have accelerated in recent days. The lightning trip of Beji Caid Essebsi in Algiers and Rabat, the arrival of Hilary Clinton in Tunis, the decision on the night of the UN Security Council authorizing the air strikes, the vice is tightening on Colonel Gaddafi. The race against the clock that he engaged against his own people is turning to his disadvantage. The mobilization of the Arab people and world opinions have finally succeeded in obliging Americans and Europeans to act.

All the Arabs would have preferred Khadafi to be defeated without external help like Mubarak and Ben Ali but this timely help is just a fair return of things. Armed to the teeth for years by Westerners, his people could hardly fight against his murderous madness. By their intervention, the Westerners will destroy the jets they themselves sold. Thus goes the madness of men guided by the only bait of gain.

France, Great Britain, the United States, Norway, Qatar have already announced that they will participate in the military intervention against Khadafi. The strikes should intervene “in a few hours”, according to the French government spokesperson.

The concern aroused by such an intervention is understandable. It does not remove anything from the heroic resistance of the Lybian people and will only accelerate a victory which remains theirs and which is part of a new era of the history of the Arab world. This Western intervention must remain limited and not to fly victory to the Libyans themselves. We bet that the Arabs “released” will remain very vigilant on this point.
