Algeria announced Thursday, March 21, the holding of an “anticipated” presidential election on September 7, 2024, three months before the date initially planned.
“It was decided to organize an anticipated presidential election on September 7, 2024,” the Presidency of the Algerian Republic said in a statement published at the end of a meeting chaired Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in the presence of the military chief of the army and the president of the Constitutional Court.
Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s mandate was to expire next December, when no reason has been put forward to explain the early holding of the next ballot.
Note that Abdelmadjid Tebboune, 78, has not yet announced if he would seek a second term.
