JCC 2023 – Tribute to the Palestinian director Hany Abu Assad
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

For their 34th edition, the Carthage JCC 2023 Cartham Days pay tribute this year to one of the emblematic figures of contemporary Palestinian cinema, filmmaker Hany Abu Assad.

Inhabited by the ills and hopes of his people, this director gave birth to a filmography drawing from reality and inspired by experience. Its passage especially during the 25th edition of the JCC in 2014 marked the Annals of the Festival and its record. Golden Tanit for its feature film Omar (2013), Hany Abu Assad won three other prizes with this film: the youth jury prize, public prize and price for best scenario.

Hany Abu Assad has acquired his international notoriety thanks, among other things, to his two major films Paradise Now which won the Golden Globe Prize for the best foreign film in 2006 and Omar Who won the Tanit d’Or of the 2014 JCC, after winning the Jury Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, two films which, moreover, were appointed to the Oscars in the “Best Foreign Film” section which is remarkably attesting to its success to position itself well in world cinema.

This tribute constitutes for the 2023 JCC edition a particular consecration to a cinema man who has largely contributed to set up a Palestinian cinematography who breaks with the classic and stereotypical image conveyed on the Palestino-Israeli conflict with a filmography inspired by touching stories and true characters, as for example in his film The idoland to highlight his remarkable course during this new edition which also promises to be a good setting as pleasant reunions.
