JCC 2023 – Tribute to the Senegalese director and writer Sevene Ousmane (1923-2023)

The 34th edition of Carthage’s cinematographic days highlights and celebrates the centenary of the birth of the Senegalese director and writer and one of the pioneers of Pan-African cinema Sevene Ousmane (1923-2023).

Faithful companion of Tahar Chériaa in the birth course of the JCC, Sembène was the first winner of the very first Tanit of Gold of the JCC in his first edition in 1966 for his film “La Noire de …”.

The father of African cinema has forged during his film career a real advocacy against the loss of African cultural identity and for resistance against oppressions of all stripes.

To this end, the tribute-like that organized the JCC constitutes a duty of memory with regard to a filmmaker who worked for the independence of cinemas in the South and to defend the causes of his homeland and Africa.
