“We walk like sleepwalkers to a planetary confrontation”
In his latest book, “The Labyrinth of Longers” (Grasset), the new perpetual secretary of the French Academy delivers a powerful and anxious meditation on the future of the world at the same time as a masterful lesson in the West and its adversaries, according to the subtitle of the work.
A book whose issues are well rendered by the following quote:
“Not to settle accounts or to ostracize some and reward others, but to build a new international legality, which makes it possible to prevent conflicts and to propagate, through all continents, prosperity, fundamental freedoms and the primacy of law; All that we should have worked as soon as the Berlin Wall is falling, and that we failed to do.
If Europe and the United States do not take advantage of the stay of history to finally build an international system in which whole humanity could recognize itself, it is possible that this opportunity is no longer represented. Tomorrow, the balance of power could change. »»
Finally, note that the title of this new book by Amine Maalouf seems to be referring to that of a work by the Philosopher Maimonide entitled “The Guide des Lésés”.
