Norway, Ireland, and Spain will recognize Palestine, despite Israel’s warnings

The leaders of Norway, Ireland and Spain announced on Wednesday that their countries will officially recognize a Palestinian state from May 28, in the name of “peace in the Middle East”, pushing Israel to immediately recall its ambassadors.

“Peace in the Middle East cannot be done without recognition of Palestine,” said Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, saying that a two-state solution was in the interest of Israel.

The head of the Irish government Simon Harris said that his country would follow the step in Norway and Spain for this recognition, without specifying a calendar.

In Madrid, Pedro Sanchez accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of “danger” of the two -state solution with his “pain and destruction” policy in Gaza.

Israel immediately denounced decisions constituting, according to him, a “prize for terrorism” and recalled his ambassadors to Dublin and Oslo for “urgent consultations”.

The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously disseminated a video message warning Ireland that such a recognition was likely to transform it into a “pawn” of Iran and Hamas and “stir up extremism”.

According to the Al-Jazira channel, whose journalists are prohibited in Israel, Malta and Slovenia should soon announce similar decisions.

“This is a historical opportunity for the Palestinians,” said the Qatari chain, recalling the key role played by Norway in the 1993 Oslo agreements that had recognized the OLP.
