Wednesday, November 22, 2023, Tunisian actress Hend Sabri announced her resignation from the United Nations World Food Program (PAM), 13 years after joining the program as a goodwill ambassador, due to what is currently happening in Gaza.
Hend Sabri has justified his resignation, in a message published on his social networks: “In the past few weeks, I have witnessed and shared the experiences of my devoted PAM colleagues, who feel helpless because of their inability to fulfill their duty as they always do, to children, mothers, fathers and grandparents of Gaza. They could not do much about the overwhelming war machine which has no mercy for civilians besieged by death. ”
And to add: “I tried to make my voice heard at the highest level of PAM and to join my colleagues to call to use the weight of the program-as it has done successfully in the past-in order to call and have strength in favor of an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza Strip, and to take advantage of the influence of the program to prevent the use of famine as a weapon of war”.
“I was certain that the WFP-which received the Nobel Peace Prize only 3 years ago-after having actively participated in the UN 2417 resolution, which condemned the use of famine as a method of war-would use its voice as strongly as it did in multiple emergencies and humanitarian crises,” she added, expressing her disappointment.
“However, famine and siege have been used as weapons of war in the last 46 days against more than two million civilians in Gaza, a weapon that has so far killed more than 14,000 people and made more than 1.6 million homeless people. Half of the buildings were destroyed and the hospitals and schools that were supposed to be safe shelters were bombed. ”
“For all this, I announce my resignation, and I wish all my colleagues from the World Security and Peace Food Program, while stressing that I will not abandon my humanitarian and societal role, but that I will exercise it in other forms,” concluded the Tunisian actress.
