European elections: the extreme right in progress

Voters from the 27 countries of the European Union were called upon to elect their representatives in the European Parliament of Strasbourg, ie 720 MEPs.

On the sidelines of the preliminary results of the ballot which took place between June 6 and 9, the European elections of 2024 highlighted an increase in the extreme right in several countries of the European Union.

The striking example is that of France, where the national rally of Jordan Bardella (former National Front of Jena-Marie Le Pen) largely won the ballot with more than 31.5% of the votes, largely ahead of Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance party.

In Germany, AFD comes second behind the conservatives, while in Italy, Fratelli d’Italia de Giorgia Meloni came out.

Other far-right parties have also progressed, such as the FPö in Austria and the party of Geert Wilders in the Netherlands. However, the extreme right, remains divided to the European Parliament, being divided into two distinct groups with significant differences, especially on Russia.

However, these results did not upset the big balances on a European scale. The European Parliament remains divided, with parties of various trends. The fact remains that they caused a “political earthquake” in France, where Emmanuel Macron announced the dissolution of the Assembly.
