Among these 1301 dead are 53 Tunisians, according to a new review revised upwards by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Last year, at least 240 pilgrims, mostly Indonesian, died during the pilgrimage. The Hajj attracts between 2 and 3 million faithful each year to Mecca, including 1.6 million from abroad.
A significant number of tens of thousands of unregistered pilgrims, allegedly aggravated the situation, especially in the Egyptian camps saturated and deprived of water, food and air conditioning.
