Massoud Pezeshkian, a 69 -year -old reform deputy who pleads for an opening from Iran to the West, won the second round of the presidential election today, in front of the ultra -conservative Said Jalili.
He succeeded the ultra -conservative president Ebrahim Raïssi who died in a helicopter accident on May 19, during a ballot which mobilized 61 million Iranians.
This deputy for Tabriz, the big city in northwest Iran, faced five other candidates, all conservatives. He presents himself as the “voice of the voiceless” and during his campaign, he received the support of two former presidents, the reformist Mohammad Khatami and the moderate Hassan Rohani.
Pezeshkian pleads for an Iran more open to the West.
