The first round of the anticipated legislative elections in France experienced a record participation of 67.5 %, the highest since 1997. With 33.15 %of the votes expressed, the National Rally (RN) and its allies, including the Union of the Far Right (UXD), have largely dominated, before the new Popular Front (27.99 %) and the presidential coalition together (20.04 %).

Projections and strategies for the second round

The projections indicate a relative majority for the RN, with a possibility of obtaining an absolute majority. A total of 307 triangular, a record, are possible in the second round. The RN is in the lead in 260 districts of the 443 where it is present.

Reactions and calls for withdrawal

A republican front forms on the left to counter the extreme right, while the macronists are struggling to unite. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal spoke of strategic withdrawals to avoid the election of RN deputies. Emmanuel Macron called for a “large democratic and republican rally” without specifying if he includes rebellious France (LFI). Jean-Luc Mélenchon announced the withdrawal of LFI candidates in third position to block the road to the RN.

Perspectives for the second round

The RN, with its results, targets a majority at the Palais-Bourbon. The new Popular Front hopes between 125 and 165 seats, while the presidential camp could obtain between 70 and 100 seats. The voting instructions differ depending on the camp, with a consensus on the left to block the RN.
