From February 3 to 10, Italy will participate as a guest of honor in the Carthage Puppet Days (JAMC), the International Puppet Festival organized at the Cité de la Culture de Tunis by the National Center for Puppet Arts, an institution supported by the Tunisian Ministry of Culture to protect and promote one of the oldest forms of theater, highly appreciated in Tunisia Mediterranean.
With the support of the Italian Embassy and the Italian Cultural Institute of Tunis, two major Italian companies will present their shows to the public of the festival: these are the “Figli d’Arte Cuticchio” of Palermo, in the presence of the master puppeteer Mimmo Cuticchio, with “the Infanzia di Orlando” and the Teatro del Draco de Ravenne with a classic of puppet stories: ” Pinocchio ”.
The company Figli by Arte Cuticchio: The historic Palermo Company of Mimmo Cuticchio occurs for the first time in Tunisia. Heir to the largest family of Sicilian puppeteers, Mimmo founded the company in Palermo in 1971 and has been working since then in the historic center of the Sicilian city, preserving and transmitting a huge heritage of traditional techniques and offering shows on the stories of Paladins to adult and children’s audiences worldwide.
In 2008, UNESCO recognized the work of puppets as “intangible heritage of humanity”, thus sealing the cultural importance of this art and its main performers.
