The oldest Prime Minister succeeds the youngest head of the government of the Fifth Republic.
Michel Barnier is the new French Prime Minister. He was now appointed by the French president, Emmanuel Macron, to replace Gabriel Attal, two months after the legislative elections which led to a national assembly without majority.
Michel Barnier, 73, was a member of all the Gaullist parties who have succeeded (UDR, RPR, UMP, LR). He has been Minister several times (environment, European affairs, foreign affairs, agriculture and food) and twice European commissioner.
Candidate for the 2021 Republicans Congress for the 2022 presidential election, he was eliminated at the end of the first round, arriving in third position.
He is the oldest Prime Minister of the Fifth Republic and succeeds Gabriel Attal, 35, who was the youngest.
