Tunisia welcomes, from June 17 to 19, 2025, the twenty-third African regional meeting on the ban on chemical weapons. This event brings together the national authorities of the African countries who have parties to the Convention on this crucial subject. The opening ceremony, chaired on Tuesday by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohamed Ali Nafti, marks the launch of these three days of debate and exchanges.
First of all, in his speech, the minister recalled Tunisian pride linked to his African identity. Then, he stressed that solutions to the continent’s challenges must come from Africa itself. In addition, he insisted on the importance of the 2063 agenda of the African Union, especially in the fields of peace and security.
In addition, Mr. Nafti said Tunisia supports all regional and international initiatives. Indeed, the objective is to strengthen cooperation between African countries. In this regard, he cited the initiative “silence the arms by 2030” as a concrete example to follow.
This meeting is a key step for participating states. Indeed, it promotes the harmonization of national policies with the objectives of the Convention. Consequently, participants discuss best practices to prohibit chemical weapons. They also define common priorities in order to consolidate regional security.
In total, 49 representatives from 45 African countries participate in this meeting. They represent their respective national authorities. In addition, experts from the organization for the ban on chemical weapons are also present. In addition, members of the Tunisian National Committee for the ban on chemical weapons take part in the debates.
Finally, this event also encourages the peaceful use of chemical sciences and technologies. Thus, it aims to support development, but also the stability of the African continent.
