It is an important archaeological discovery. The National Institute of Heritage (INP) revealed the discovery in Sfax of a Roman necropolis containing more than thirty tombs, as well as a Roman residence decorated with geometric mosaics on its soil.
According to the information communicated by the INP, this discovery was carried out as part of the redevelopment of the North-South road connecting Sidi Mansour to Tina.
An institution team undertook a rescue excavation on the site from January 3, 2024 to March 16, 2024.
The main objective of this excavation was to analyze, document and preserve the archaeological elements discovered on the site.
These two finds, approximately from the 2nd to the 4th century AD, have great historical importance.
In Tunisia, the latest discovery of this kind dates from 2021 when the National Heritage Institute announced the discovery of an archaeological site of great importance to Oued Souani, governorate of KEF.
This site, explains the INP, includes many archaeological monuments, architectural inscriptions and the traces of an olive oil press, in addition to a large number of water tanks.
