A first medical medical has just been made at La Rabta hospital. The Ministry of Health announced, Thursday, June 19, 2025, that the interventional radiology team of the establishment successfully carried out therapeutic prostatic embolization, a great first in the country.
The intervention was carried out on a patient with an advanced prostate hypertrophy, unable to undergo general anesthesia. Carried out under local anesthesia, without recourse to surgery, the operation was conducted under the supervision of Professor Habiba Mizouni, at the head of a 100 % Tunisian team.
According to the ministry’s press release, this innovative technique opens up new therapeutic perspectives, especially for the elderly or with operational contraindications. It also testifies to the qualitative leap of Tunisian medicine towards less invasive, more targeted and lower risks approaches.
Created six months ago, the RABTA interventional radiology unit was already distinguished by major interventions: mastery of severe hemorrhages, implementation of targeted therapeutic catheters at the level of several organs – liver, kidneys, lungs, uterus, digestive system or bile ducts.
“These successes concretely change the lives of patients and illustrate Tunisian skills and know-how in matters of health,” said the ministry in its press release.
